I’m Chris and this is Lucy. As the Chief Creative Officer at IDW Publishing, I’m happy to be able to publish many comics that my daughter, now 8 but around comics her entire life so far, can enjoy. That part makes me happy. What makes me less happy is the idea that she’s been growing up around an industry that still has a lot of growing up to do itself. I want comics to be a welcoming, diverse, and inspiring—and safe—haven for her, and want us all to work on providing that for her and other current and future fans, as well as for current creators and fans. We’re all better than the recent—and sadly not only recent—headline-making stories that help tarnish comics’s reputation. So it’s time we all stop letting those few ignorant voices be the loudest voices. We outnumber them; we’re better than them. And it’s time we all speak up and speak out to remind everyone of that. Come on, comics, I’m pulling for you; I always have. That’s the whole point here—WE are comics, not them.
